Birds and Beans News - Summer 2010

New Outlets

If you love ice cream you are gonna go crazy for Jedd's Frozen Custard! Try their Affogato (espresso over frozen custard) or have your Birds and Beans coffee on the side. Find Jedd and his team at his beautiful new location: 2470 Yonge Street (4 blocks north of Eglinton).

Right here in the Lakeshore, Sweet Olenka's has moved locations and is now offering Birds and Beans espresso and drip coffee. Their chocolate and home made ice cream is amazing! And Olenka and Ray are delightful. Check them out at 2834 Lake Shore Blvd. W. between 3rd and 4th Sreets.

Earth Rangers is an innovative charitable organization with a mission to inspire kids with a lasting passion to build a green future. Their headquarters are in an award winning green building with solar panels in the parking area, ground source heating and cooling, a low energy data centre, native species landscape and a multitude of environmental choices. They found us at the Green Living Show and now they are going Bird Friendly® in their cafeteria with our El Salvador Eco Café!

Happenings at the Café

The Mimico Square beside the café was officially opened in June, so now we have the best location in the GTA! We're working up the details of transforming the back of the building to include a Project Chirp demonstration garden to complement a new patio. We'll need some community effort with the planting in the fall.

The City of Toronto will begin work on phase 2 of the Mimico Linear Park in July! So our vision of Mimico as the village at the end of the Martin Goodman Trail will become a reality come Spring 2011. Strap on those blades downtown or hop on that bike and come for a certified Bird Friendly® boutique coffee!

You might find people on our roof studying the shadow patterns. We're well into our plan to install solar panels capable of producing enough green power for our entire operation. So soon your certified Bird Friendly® coffee will be roasted and brewed with solar power!

Triple Certified Coffees

We launched our new line of Triple Certified Coffees at the Green Living Show: Certified Organic, Certified Bird Friendly®, and either Certified Fair Trade OR Rainforest Alliance certified so you know they are good for birds, good for people and good for you! These are the only certified Bird Friendly® coffees available in Canadian stores. Ask your retailer to add them to their shelf.

Fix for Internet Explorer 6 (IE6)

When we deployed our new website, there was a problem placing orders for many users of IE6. This problem is now corrected. Sorry IE6 users... we had no idea how much you liked your IE6!

Two Time Gem of the Lakeshore and Etobicoke Urban Hero Semi-Finalist in Environment Category

We are delighted to have been recognized for the second time as a Gem of the Lakeshore and as a semi-finalist by the Urban Hero awards for our efforts to bring certified Bird Friendly® coffee to the Canadian public and our general environmental leadership. A Friend of Birds and Beans, Christina Sharma, won the Urban Hero for environment for her songbird conservation work with Project Chirp.

Upcoming Bird Walks

The next walk will be Saturday June 19th from 9am to 11am at Colonel Samuel Smith Park. See the CCFEW Bird Walks page for details. Sponsored by Birds and Beans.
