The Democratic Republic of East Timor (Timor-Leste) achieved formal independence on 20 May 2002 after a long history of colonial strife followed by brutal unrest. East Timor's independence resulted from a national referendum in 1999, in which 78.5 per cent of the population voted for independence. In March 2002, a democratically elected Constituent Assembly passed East Timor's Constitution officially forming their new country.
Coffee has been a key part of building Timor-Leste and accounts for around 90 per cent of merchandise exports.
This coffee is complex and balanced. Brewing it extra-strength benefits its aromatic earthy and woodsy flavours including warming spices like cedar and pepper. It has a lovely toasty flavour and a hint of pipe tobacco and a long satisfying finish.
